First introduced in 1978, the Hermès Evelyne was designed by Evelyne Bertrand, head of the Hermès equestrian department, as a functional carry-all for horse groomers. The perforated “H” design allowed airflow to dry equipment while on the go. Initially considered a purely utilitarian item, the Evelyne bag remained within the equestrian division for many years.
In the early 2000s, however, the bag’s practicality and chic simplicity made it a luxury accessory. It was moved to the leather goods department and became a star. Today, the Hermès Evelyne bags are loved for their laid back yet elegant look, with the perforated “H” proudly worn on the front.
The Hermès Evelyne has gone through several updates since its introduction. The first version, Evelyne I, was simple with no external pocket and a fixed non-adjustable strap. The second version, Evelyne II, had an external pocket but the strap was non-adjustable. The latest version, Evelyne III, has an external pocket and an adjustable strap to wear the bag across the body or over the shoulder.
- Hermès Evelyne 16 Mini (TPM) – A mini version to carry just the essentials.
- Hermès Evelyne 29 (PM) – An everyday size.
- Hermès Evelyne 33 (GM) – A larger size for more space.
- Hermès Evelyne 40 (TGM) – The biggest size for travel or to carry more.
In 2016, Hermès also released the Evelyne Sellier, made from Vache Hunter leather with an embossed logo, available in 29cm and 33cm sizes.
The Hermès Evelyne comes in three leathers. Clemence leather is soft and slouchy, made from baby bullhide, and gets more unique over time. Epsom leather is lightweight, structured and rain resistant, easy to maintain. Maurice leather, also from baby bullhide, is similar to Clemence but with more structure, which helps the bag to hold its shape.
How much does Hermès Evelyne cost?
If you’re buying from an Hermès boutique, a Clemence leather Evelyne TPM is $2,300 and the Evelyne 29 is $4,025. But since the Evelyne is so coveted, it’s not always in stock and prices on the resale market can be higher.
A Evelyne TPM in great condition can go for $3,500 to $4,000. So if you want one and can’t get it in store, be prepared to pay more.
At Perfecthbags, you can enjoy the same look, texture, and craftsmanship without the extreme price tag.
